Let’s assume you already know your God-given purpose and you’re living in line with your core values. Awesome.

To joyfully pursue your most purposeful path, you also need to know which roadblocks could keep you from success!

You must be keenly aware of those potential barriers so you can pro-actively prevent them from blocking your progress.

So what are they — these roadblocks that could cause you and your business to come to a screeching halt?

I’ll share with you three barriers that have tried their darnedest to block my progress over the years.

Photo from Flickr

Low Energy Could Keep You From Success

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

You have tons of creative ideas but lack the stamina you need to implement them. You toss and turn at night then have trouble performing at optimum levels the next day.

You don’t eat well.

You don’t exercise regularly.

You’re tired!!

When it finally dawned on me that I was no longer performing at my best, I hired a Vitality Mentor who guided me to renewed vibrancy and wellness by encouraging me to change my diet and drink more water throughout the day.

I also joined our local Y and made a commitment to attend at least three cardio or strength classes a week.

Just a few changes and that barrier is down!

We’ve got to be pro-active.

Low Self-Esteem Could Keep You From Success

OK. You know what it’s like to be successful.

Perhaps as a mom, a corporate exec, a lawyer. But as a work-from-home entrepreneur? Not so much.

You start to doubt your ability to make a difference AND a profit.

It’s all about mindset and mentoring in my opinion.

You need to transform your limiting beliefs into positive affirmations (and you need a coach or a mentor you admire to help stay the course).

“... Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)

Only then will you be able to discern and carry out God’s will for your life.

Only then will you be able to achieve success.

Lack of Passion Could Keep You From Success

As entrepreneurs, we’ve got to be excited about our work.

We’re certain to have business-related duties and responsibilities that don’t thrill us. We either need to “outsource” those duties or we need to perform them ourselves with a positive attitude.

The majority of our work, however, must make excellent use of our natural talents and abilities.

The work we do most of the time must be something we enjoy.

Do you enjoy speaking? Speak!

Do you enjoy writing? Write!

Be sure to weave speaking and writing into each week if not each day.

And be sure you speak and write on topics that genuinely interest you.

Makes sense, right?

Be Proactive!

Don’t let life “just happen” to you. Don’t let your business “just happen” either.

Surround yourself with like-minded entrepreneurs who want to see you succeed.

Join a group like Peak Performance!

Hire a mentor or a coach.

Work with a business owner who’s “been there.”

It’s incredibly hard to bust through your roadblocks by yourself–whatever they may be.

Your first step is to identify which roadblocks could keep you from success.

Your second step is to tear down each barrier one at a time.

How about you?

Which roadblocks are keeping you from success?

What are you doing to tear down those roadblocks once and for all?

Thank you for taking a moment to share your answers in the comment box below.

Be sure to listen to my Work With Jory video if you find yourself struggling alone.

To your ongoing success!

If having a website has been confusing, complex, and overwhelming, I’ve got great news. It doesn’t have to be that way!

What if I told you that it only takes 3 steps and 5 pages to have a website that gets you clients you love? That’s what I’ll be talking about with Jory on Heart & Soul.”

About Dawud Miracle

“Whenever I ask my clients what they value most from working with me, it always comes down to how easy I make it for them to have a business online. That’s my goal as both a website designer and business coach – to brush aside all the complexity, overwhelm, and conflicting information about doing business on the internet and make it all easier for you.

No canned programs or approaches here. Since I’ve lived it, I know it.That’s why my approach is organic and tailored specifically for your business needs, your personal wants, and your comfort with the internet.

Since 2003 I’ve worked with more than 600 individual coaches, alternative healers, and many other types of service providers to help them develop a website, a solid marketing plan, and a step-by-step process for reaching their client load and revenue goals.

If you’re not the ‘techie type,’ that’s all the better. The bottom line is I can make the web simpler for you to use for your business.”

Dawud’s Favorite Quotes

Establishing or growing a successful coaching business or ministry is a challenge, and many of us hit seasons when we wonder if it’s worth the effort to push through our questions and disappointments to build it, especially in a struggling economy.

Jory Fisher is well acquainted with that journey. She left a successful career as a lawyer and associate dean of a law school and stepped into coaching with a dream of doing what God had prepared for her.

Jory Fisher

Growing a Purposeful, Successful Coaching Business

It wasn’t a simple shift, but Jory saw herself as someone who had always enjoyed asking the big questions in life. “In high school, I wondered how the various civilizations answered questions like, ‘Who am I and why am I here?’ and, ‘What is my relationship to God, the universe, and others?’”

As Jory began to shape her new career, one of the key questions she continually asked herself was, “What is my calling?”

To what was God calling her? Whom was she meant to serve? How would she step into the longings of her heart and serve God and others with success?

God not only began to answer those questions for Jory, He led her into specialized coach training that put “purpose and calling” at the core of what she believes, teaches, and lives as a person and a coach.

“When I discovered what it is that helps a person get clear on their purpose, I realized how each of us can develop our confidence and courage. It makes all the difference in the world to have that clarity of calling.”

Now she coaches entrepreneurs to build their own “God-guided, purpose-driven, heart-centered” business.

And she loves it.

Growing a Successful Coaching Business Online

A hard lesson Jory learned a few years into her entrepreneurial journey involved online marketing. She discovered there was much more to it than having a pretty website. She now suggests, “Know your purpose and have a clear and focused target market! That’s done best through prayer and good market research.”

A few more tips she offers in building a website with a focused target market include:

1. Find out to whom you relate the best and who needs you most.
2. Have an image of that person in mind as you write your blog posts and create your site.
3. Make your website appealing, but don’t forget that the key purpose is to attract and help your ideal client.
4. Put yourself in the perspective of the person you want to attract rather than keeping that perspective on you and your needs.
5. Continually add content that will help your ideal client in some way.

When I asked Jory what she would tell a coach who wants to amp up their unique reach, she said…

“I would suggest they align themselves with a mentor or coach whom they know, like, and trust and who seems to be doing well with whatever it is they (the coach) wants to do.”

It’s a question many entrepreneurs struggle with: How can we become a high performance business owner, performing at optimum levels day after day, when we are our own CEO?

Though I assure you I’ve not yet discovered THE SINGLE MAGIC FORMULA, I’ve come a long way with the help of mentors and books, and through trial & error. I’ll share with you here some of the best tips I’ve learned and hope you will return the favor in the comment box below.

Managing Our Energy is Key to High Performance

According to authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, “Performance, health, and happiness are grounded in the skillful management of energy,” not time. [The Power of Full Engagement, Free Press, Copyright © 2003]

Have you ever noticed how high performers have not “just enough” energy, but an abundance of energy? What’s their secret?

Do they have routines and practices in place that help them bound out of bed in the morning?

Do they have specific rituals that help them charge forth boldly and enthusiastically throughout their day?

Do they regularly set aside time to re-charge their batteries?

Do they have a “higher purpose” to which they feel called?

As an avid student of what helps people reach their full potential, I enjoy reading books like The Power of Full Engagement and Brendon Burchard’s The Charge. I strive to implement whatever speaks to me in my own life and business, and I enjoy helping my clients do the same.

In their book The Power of Full Engagement, Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz give us practical, easily implementable action steps to help us amp up our energy so we can amp up our performance big time. They make a strong case for their premise: energy management is the secret to long-lasting success.

Challenging Ourselves is Key to High Performance

Photo from Flickr

I had the privilege of attending Brendon Burchard’s High Performance Academy in 2011. He passionately shared with us the strategies and concepts he would soon write about in his best-selling book The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive, Free Press, Copyright © 2012.

Brendon maintains that, to live a fully charged and successful life, we must (among other things…):

Challenge ourselves to go beyond our current skill level and current situation

Stretch ourselves by making a contribution that activates our weaknesses as well as our strengths

Expand ourselves by getting out of our perceived comfort zone and tapping into our highest self

Equip ourselves to make the difference we’re here on earth to make.

“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.”

~Henry David Thoreau

Being Fully Present is Key to High Performance

In his inimitable, highly animated style, Brendon also urges us to be engaged, enthusiastic, and energetic whenever we interact with others. We need to be Fully Present, he says, to the people and world around us if we want to make a truly meaningful contribution during our lifetime.

We need to be Fully Present if we want to become an influential High Performance Business Owner.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow declares we must master our physiological, safety, relationship, esteem, cognitive, and aesthetic needs before we master our higher need for self-actualization (i.e., realize our full potential).

Knowing our mission and striving to realize our full potential helps us get out of bed in the morning

Knowing our mission and striving to realize our full potential helps us achieve success

Maslow maintains we must tend to our foundational needs first (e.g., food, shelter, safety). To live a successful, meaningful life, however, we must look beyond ourselves… we must look deeply within ourselves… we must strive to become all we are meant to be.

“Musicians must make music, artists must paint, poets must write if they are to be ultimately at peace with themselves. What human beings can be, they must be. They must be true to their own nature. This need we may call self-actualization… It refers to man’s desire for self-fulfillment, namely to the tendency for him to become actually in what he is potentially: to become everything one is capable of becoming.”
~Abraham Maslow

Knowing Your Mission Gives You Clarity

Jesus prays for his followers, “As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world” (John 17:18). Just as Jesus brought his Father glory on earth by completing the work he was given, we are called to do likewise.

“We seldom realize fully that we are sent to fulfill God-given tasks. We act as if we have to choose how, where, and with whom to live. We act as if we were simply dropped down in creation and have to decide how to entertain ourselves until we die. But we were sent into the world by God, just as Jesus was. Once we start living our lives with that conviction, we will soon know what we were sent to do.”
~Henri J.M. Nouwen

Know you are here on earth for a reason.

Discover the details with enthusiasm.

Pray for guidance and step out in faith.

With that clarity of calling, you’ll bust through barriers of fear and doubt and self-imposed limitations.

With that clarity of calling, you’ll step out in faith on the (sometimes) long, winding road to success.

Knowing Your Mission Gives You Confidence

God fully equips us for our “good works” (2 Timothy 3: 16-17).

As we discern who we are and what we’re meant to do on earth, God equips us to fulfill our mission through meditation on His Word, through our prayers, through our experiences, and through our relationships.

We gain more and more confidence as we see the results of our mission (the fruits of our labors) unfold.

Knowing Your Mission Gives You Courage

Just yesterday I received a Facebook message from my daughter Brett Beeson (pictured below) that touched my heart deeply. Brett, a 21-year-old midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, has spent the last few months in Oman studying their language, customs, and culture while developing close relationships and ties. She writes:

You know, Mom, it’s funny… I was so upset last night about leaving Oman in just ten days and praying about how I can best use my time left here and being so worried and troubled… and this morning God answered my prayers and showed me my mission in life. It may not be in the way I like it; it so rarely is. …But this morning for one of the first times I truly felt it fit me like a glove and I accepted it–my mission is to spread truth and understanding. It’s as simple and complex as that. It is to spread the light of truth in a world of rhetoric, darkness, and hate, and a mission such as that deserves any effort or pain on my part. Anything.

Just some morning thoughts from your introvert daughter.

All the best. Coming home to see you soon.

Love,

Brett

Why Many Christians Are Leary of the Law of Attraction

Just mention the Law of Attraction to a group of, how you say, conservative Christians and you’re bound to get a passionate reaction. The term conjures up New Thought giants from the early 20th century, inspired men such as Napoleon Hill, Wallace Wattles, and James Allen who, were they alive today, mostly likely would not define themselves as evangelical Christians.

In short, the Law of Attraction proclaims “like attracts like” — that if we think negative thoughts, we’ll bring about negative results. If we focus on the positive, however, and truly believe in the object of our desire, then positive results shall ensue. The belief, as I understand it, is based on the idea that people and thoughts are made from pure energy which seems to beg the question: Where is Christ in this equation? If we can just think something into existence, why pray? Why develop a relationship with Jesus? The Law of Attraction appears to put a heavy emphasis on energy and thought and, at first blush, little to no emphasis on traditional tenets of the Christian faith. So… should we evangelicals pitch the whole thing?

What Christians Can Learn from the Law of Attraction

We would be foolish to do so. Let me give you a personal example.

My dad was the eternal optimist; my mother not so much. Truth be told, my mother, until she became a Christian late in life, was one of the most pessimistic people I’ve ever met. The more she complained, the worse life became for her (and me). I grew up with a clear understanding of “like attracts like” and made a conscious decision to choose to see the positive even in negative situations. The alternative was not pretty.

I think my dad and Mr. Rogers’ mother grew up in similar neighborhoods. As the horrors of the Boston massacre unfolded last week, and people struggled to explain what was going on to their kids, Huff Post printed this quote from The Mister Rogers Parenting Book.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” ~Fred Rogers

And so we do. If we look for the good, we will see the good. We will attract the good. We will bring about the good. If we get caught up in fear and doubt and self-flagellation, however… we will repel everybody.

How Christian Business Owners Can Apply the Law of Attraction

You wouldn’t be in business if you didn’t have a service or a product to offer. Agreed?

You won’t be in business long if you don’t have clients and customers.

Your first step is to get crystal clear on who you are, whom you serve, and how you serve them.

Your second step is to prepare your message, that is, what you communicate to your prospective clients and customers, in such a way that your written and spoken words attract those whom you’re meant to serve.

[If I wanted to work with 20 something male mechanics who'd rather eat dirt than read a blog post on faith and the Law of Attraction, believe you me. I wouldn't be writing this message!]

Your third step is to gain confidence and reflect your Christ-centered confidence in the marketplace. To attract your ideal client and customer, you have to believe–even just a little at first–that with the Lord’s help you are fully equipped to serve them well.

Sounding rather like the Law of Attraction, don’t you think?

Exude the energy of “I gotta get a client to pay the bills,” and people will go running.

Exude the energy of “I don’t know what I’m worth,” and you won’t even be able to ask for the sale.

Exude the energy of “I’m not sure if I can deliver these goods or services,” and you’ll offer them at a reduced rate–maybe even free.

If we think negative thoughts, we’ll bring about negative results. Period.

So… where is God in the equation?

God created everything, including the Universal Laws, including the Law of Attraction. We must carefully and regularly examine Scripture, however, to ensure that our understanding of His laws is correct.

And we must pray for guidance. As Jehoshaphat King of Judah admonished Ahab King of Israel, “First seek the counsel of the Lord.” (I Kings 22:5) In everything. For everything. Including help in discerning our ideal client. Including help with how to attract the people we’re meant to serve. Including help with paying the bills and crafting our products and services.

“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” ~Philippians 4:6

And by all means, we must focus on giving… not getting. If you’re all caught up in “getting clients now,” your fears and doubts will overtake you. Focus instead on giving… through your articles and speeches and complimentary info products and blog posts… and your business will flourish in due time.

“Give and it will be given unto you.” ~Luke: 6:38

Sounds a lot like the Law of Attraction to me!

Before you go, take a few more minutes to read my post “Who Am I?” Self Reflection Helps Us Serve Others With Excellence. I firmly believe that the better we know ourselves, the better we’ll attract our ideal clients and customers and fill our practice with clients we love.

As Christian business owners, there is much we can learn from the Law of Attraction. Agree? Disagree? Please share your views in the comment box below.

To your success!

You have to get people to notice you and ask people to work with you, and they have to say yes.

Shhhh. Silence the sounds around you. Reflect, and reflect deeply. “Who am I?” A question calling for an answer. Can you hear it?

As service-providing entrepreneurs, we must know ourselves well if we are to reach our full potential as business owners. We must know ourselves well if we are to make the difference we’re here on earth to make. Though it may sound like a contradiction, focused self reflection helps us serve others with excellence.

Focused self reflection helps us find, follow, and fulfill our divine calling.

“It is necessary … for a man to go away by himself … to sit on a rock … and ask, ‘Who am I, where have I been, and where am I going?”
~Carl Sandburg

Do you know who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re going? We often get so caught up in the “doing” that we fail to carve out time to sit on a rock, or walk along the beach, and reflect. At least I do. Maybe you’re different.

I recall a time in law school when I was so caught up in “doing” that the assistant rector of my church, a short fellow with a red bushy beard, took me aside and said, “Jory, just BE.” He introduced me to the works of Henri J.M. Nouwen and gently yet urgently suggested that I embark on an even deeper inner journey of my soul. He told me that God loved me unconditionally–that I didn’t have to do anything to earn His love or to pay Him back for all of the grace bestowed upon me. I did, however, need to spend significant time in self reflection, contemplating who I am as a child of God. Only then, he said, would I be able to serve others with excellence and fulfill my purpose here on earth.

I wish I could tell you it’s been an easy journey…. that just a few sessions of rock sitting and beach walking did the trick… that after just a few sessions I knew exactly who was looking back at me in the mirror and exactly how I could serve others best. I wish I could…or do I?

There’s something magical about the process of self-discovery, about the process of self-reflection. Though our God-given purpose doesn’t change, our understanding of it does. When we stop asking the questions, we run the risk of trying to take charge of our own lives or living a day-to-day superficial existence. Hmmm. Sounds dreadful. More rock sitting please.

To get started, carve out time alone with God on a regular basis… on a rock, at the beach, in your garden, on your sofa… to seek answers to these timeless questions:

Who am I at my core?

Whom am I meant to serve?

How am I meant to serve them?

What gifts and strengths do I have to offer?

What effect do my gifts and strengths have on those I’m serving?

What problem am I meant to solve –> what is my mission at this stage of my life?

Ask. Listen. Reflect. Serve.

And please, if you would be so kind, come back to share your insights in the comment box below. Your words may be exactly what my readers and I need to hear.

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened.” Luke 11: 9-10

May the Lord bless you and keep you and be gracious unto you.
