You’ve heard it before. Perhaps 100 times. Maybe more.
Leaders Are Learners!
Whether we learn by listening, reading, praying, or doing…
We need to continually nourish our hearts, souls, and minds in order to be a positive influence in the lives of others (and lead a joyful, purposeful life ourselves).
Over and over again, Scripture advises us to “get wisdom.” Examples:
Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor. ~Proverbs 4:5-9
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. ~James 1:5-6
So… how do we nourish our hearts, souls, and minds? What do you do?
- TED talks can be pretty cool though sometimes they venture off into the land of the bizarre.
- Book Clubs with fellow sojourners can be awesome.
- Church and Bible Studies. Of course.
- Daily Devotionals. Check.√
- Evening news. Debatable.
Seriously, what activities/methods would you add to this list?
How do you “get wisdom”?????
Yes, God grants wisdom to His children who ask for it (believing and not doubting):
At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered, … “Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for–both riches and honor–so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in the my ways and obey my statues and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” 1 Kings 3:5-14
(I wonder how many of us think to ask God for wisdom in our daily prayers?)
