“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” ~ William James (1842 – 1910)
Perhaps you need an attitude adjustment?
I know I’ve had to alter my attitude once or thrice as a service-providing entrepreneur. This journey of becoming (and remaining) a purpose-guided business owner is no easy feat!
What is easy is falling into the snare of stinkin’ thinkin.’ Especially if you’re a solopreneur, you know exactly what I’m talking about:
- The services I offer aren’t worth much.
- If I raise my prices, nobody will want to hire me.
- Who am I to charge higher rates?
- How will I ever find enough clients?
Sound familiar?
That kind of thinkin’ will hold you back and keep you from serving the people you’re called to serve.
“For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Psalms 23:7)
A better approach:
If you lack confidence in your ability to serve others with excellence, do whatever you need to do to hone your skills, master your thoughts, and allow God to work through you to help you bless your clients.
For many service-providing solopreneurs, having to “get clients now” is a brand new experience. We come from corporate or academic or government backgrounds, to name a few, where marketing our services to attract clients was not exactly part of our job description. No wonder our attitudes need adjustment!
But adjust them we must. We either get over the hump by altering our mindset and attitude or we go out and get a job. (As entrepreneurs are inclined to say these days, “Having your own business is like personal development on steroids.”)
Note: There’s no shame in re-entering the workforce. It’s the in-between stage of doubt and discouragement that’s “de-energizing” and totally unproductive.
What if, instead of continually doubting ourselves as solopreneurs, we boldly proclaimed:
- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~Philippians 4:13
- “My God shall supply all [my] need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 4:19
- I’ll commit my way to the Lord, and trust in Him, and He shall bring it to pass! (from Psalm 37:5)
What if we practiced speaking joyful affirmations every day?
What if we got the help we needed to be successful?
What if we thanked God every day for our myriad blessings? (“Be ye thankful.” Colossians 3:15)
What if we truly believed that God is our Supply and that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart? (Psalm 37:3)
“For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)
Are you called to be a business owner?
Then it’s time to get and maintain a positive attitude.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy path.” ~Proverbs 3:5-6
Questions to Ponder
- What area of my life have I not committed to the Lord?
- What area of my business have I not committed to the Lord?
- What am I doing to hone my skills as a service-providing entrepreneur?
- What am I doing to alter my life by altering the attitude of my mind?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for calling us to serve you by serving others as entrepreneurs. Help us keep a positive and grateful attitude even when we face challenges. Help us remember throughout each day that this is our calling and that you are with us always. Thank you for being our Rock, our Strength, and our Salvation. Amen.
